Issam Kamel Abdel Rahman Al-Salem ( June 10, 1938 - September 5 , 1993 ) was a Palestinian politician, diplomat, and academic. He was born in the village of Kafr Zibad in the Palestinian Tulkarm Governorate . He holds a doctorate in international law . He is the Palestinian ambassador to a number of countries around the world, and is considered one of the founders of Palestinian diplomacy.  He played an important role during the preparations for the Madrid Conference in 1991 .

His upbringing

Issam Kamel Abdel Rahman Al-Salem was born on June 10, 1938 in the village of Kafr Zibad in the Tulkarm Governorate in the West Bank . After he finished high school, he went to Jordan , and then to Kuwait , where he worked as a teacher for four years. He then went to Spain to complete his university studies, where he studied economics and political science. After graduating, he continued his graduate studies, where he obtained a master’s degree, then obtained a doctorate in international law in 1973 .

Political and diplomatic life

Issam Kamel served as representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the Arab League from 1974 to 1975 , then as Palestine’s ambassador to Cuba from 1975 to 1980 , as ambassador to East Germany from 1980 to 1990 , then as ambassador to Spain from July 13, 1990 until his death on September 5 . 1993 . [3] [4] During his tenure as Palestinian ambassador to Spain , he played an important role in preparing for the Madrid Conference in 1991, and his home in Madrid was a center for the Palestinian delegation participating in the negotiations, and he participated with the Palestinian delegation in the discussions.
Issam Kamel also served for many years as a member of the permanent delegation of the Palestine Liberation Organization to the United Nations .

His death

Issam Kamel died on September 5, 1993 in the Spanish capital , Madrid , [1] that is, only a few days before the signing of the Oslo Accords . His body was transported to be buried in his hometown of Kafr Zibad in the Tulkarm Governorate , and thousands participated in his funeral. Issam Kamel is considered the The first Palestinian official in exile to be buried in Palestine .
