Information

Sheikh Suleiman Al-Atawneh, was the sheikh of the Al-Atawneh tribe in the Negev in the late Ottoman era. He resided in the city of Beersheba after its founding, and held administrative positions, including the presidency of the Beersheba municipality on the eve of World War I.

his life

Al-Atawneh tribe belongs to Al-Natush, from Arab Al-Tayaha . They took their name from their grandfather, "Atiyya" (that's why they are also known as "Atiyya's sons"), who is buried in Tabuk.

Sheikh Suleiman Al-Atawneh was famous in the late nineteenth century for his wealth and generosity, and for resolving disputes between the Bedouins of the Negev.

He was known for his forbearance, piety, and foresight, so that he became a reference for all the Bedouins of the Negev, especially those who came from them. He married a urban woman, and has lived in Beersheba since then.

His positions

The statesmen of the Ottoman era used to visit him, and were guided by his views on the politics of the Negev Bedouins. They entrusted him with a number of jobs, so he was a member of the public council in Jerusalem , and in the board of directors in Beersheba, and he was appointed mayor.
His dispute with Sheikh Salman al-Huzayl

A dispute arose between him and Sheikh Salman Al-Huzayl, even though they were both from Taiha . Each of the two sheikhs began to strengthen his side with alliances from the Bedouin clans in the Negev and outside it. It appears that Sheikh Salman al-Atawneh, who was close to the men of the Ottoman Empire, succeeded in his endeavors against his meager opponent, who was taken to Damascus and hanged there, after he was accused of assaulting the Bedouins , oppressing them, committing immorality, and so on.

Sheikh Suleiman, according to the opinion of Aref al-Arif, was the first to educate his Bedouin children, including Sheikh Hassan al-Atawneh, the sheikh of the al-Atawneh clan during the British Mandate, and Farid Effendi al-Atawneh, who was an employee in the office of the city of Beersheba, and among them Salim Effendi al-Atawneh, a graduate of the School of Agriculture in Tulkarem Among them: Salem, Awwad, and Ibrahim.
