Information

It is part of the struggle of the Palestinian people. Muhammad Al-Hassi, who chose to be a paramedic, seeks to save the wounded despite his injury. He wants to sleep with a clear conscience

He spent about twenty years of his life moving between destroyed homes, injured people, and martyrs in various areas of the southern Gaza Strip. He was keen to perform his humanitarian duty in the most difficult circumstances experienced by the southern regions in light of the Israeli bombing and targeting of civilians. Currently, you see him close to the return tents, despite the dozens of injuries he suffered during his work, especially in his right hand.

Muhammad Al-Hassi (43 years old) is the director of the Khan Yunis Ambulance Center at the Palestine Red Crescent Society. He is keen to be present daily near the return tents in the town of Khuza’a, east of the city of Khan Yunis. His injured hand did not prevent him from continuing his work. Many people ask him about his ability to continue his work as a paramedic, despite his hand injury.

Al-Hassi was injured by shrapnel from an Israeli Apache aircraft missile while trying to treat wounded people during the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2002, two years after its outbreak. He underwent several surgeries, and recovered months later. While working ten years later, he was injured again in the same hand while rescuing an injured person, which prompted doctors to install a platinum orthopedic device in it.
Al-Hasi says to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed: “I strongly believe in the verse that says that whoever saves a soul is as if he has saved all of humanity. I feel happy when no one’s injury is serious, or if we save an injured person at a critical moment, because humanitarian work is greater than the Israeli occupation and democracy.” which he claims. He adds: "The danger in my profession as a paramedic begins when I get into the ambulance and start working to save people's lives." He notes that he suffered many injuries throughout his body. "I was injured in several parts of my body as a result of the repeated Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. In many cases, my death was inevitable. But when I saw the condition of the injured and the Israeli crimes, I tended to treat my injury quickly, to return to work and treat the injured."
