Anwar Al-Khatib (1917 - 1993 ) is a Palestinian politician . He was mayor of East Jerusalem from 1948 to 1950. He was exiled to Safed by the Israeli occupation authorities after the 1967 defeat on charges of incitement to disobedience against the Israeli authorities. He was an advisor to the Palestinian delegation in the peace talks in 1991.

He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown of Hebron . [3]

Anwar obtained a diploma in psychology from the Arab College in Jerusalem , and then obtained a bachelor ’s degree and a diploma in law. After his removal from the mayorship of Jerusalem, he founded the Jerusalemite magazine Al-Hadaf , and in 1989 he wrote a book entitled “With Saladin in Jerusalem: Reflections and Memories.” ». [3]

Because of his participation in the Palestinian revolution , he was arrested, so he left the country, heading to Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman , and stayed there during the years of World War II . Then he returned to Jerusalem in 1945 AD , and was appointed Secretary General of the Supreme Islamic Council in Palestine.
He was elected as a member of the Arab Higher Authority, which was headed by Jamal Al-Husseini , and then he was appointed secretary of the Construction Project Association, headed by Musa Al-Alami .
After the decision to partition Palestine , Anwar led a group of activists to guard the properties of Islamic endowments from attacks by Jewish gangs. [3]
In 1948 AD , specifically after the Nakba , he was appointed mayor of the first municipality in Jerusalem and remained in this position for two years until he was dismissed for political reasons. [4]
In 1951 AD, he was elected as a representative of the city of Jerusalem for the Jordanian parliamentary session until 1954 AD . He participated in three Jordanian ministries, then in 1964 AD he was appointed as the first Jordanian ambassador to Cairo , and then as governor of Jerusalem until 1967 AD , when it fell into the hands of Israeli forces.
