Information
Fahmi Abdel-Hay Al-Husseini was born in Gaza City in 1304 AH. (1896 AD).
His father, Sharif Abd al-Hay al-Husseini, took care of his upbringing and education. From an early age, he chose for him the elite professors present in Gaza to teach him elementary sciences. Ibrahim Issa al-Masry says in his book “The Antiquities Complex” about Fahmi al-Husseini’s father: “His Excellency al-Sharif Abd al-Hay al-Husseini was one of the notables of Palestine.” He was one of the most prominent poets in his day, one of the most prominent of its families, one of the most eloquent orators, and one of the most powerful printed poets. He wrote a collection of poetry no less important than the greatest collections, and he was a friend of the philosopher of Islam, Sayyed Jamal al-Din al-Afghani.
Fahmi Abdel-Hay Al-Husseini attended a high school in Istanbul, from which he entered the Faculty of Law, where he obtained his degree with distinction. He returned to his country, Gaza, and was appointed (Public Prosecutor) and then resigned to work in law.
He published “Al-Huquq” magazine, then “Sawt Al-Haq” newspaper, and published his articles on their pages. While he was working in law, journalism, and writing, many of his family and friends urged him to run for mayor of Gaza out of their desire to reform and advance the city. He won the elections and became mayor of Gaza, and he began working with determination and determination that changed the reality of Gaza City from one state to another.
He died in Gaza in 1359 AH (1947 AD).
Among his achievements:
1. The water project and its wonderful organization, such that there was not a house left in Gaza that did not receive water, and this is what prompted the residents to expand construction, which led to the city’s area increasing at rates never seen before.
2. Opening a school for girls that included a large number of female students.
3. He completed the construction of the municipal hospital, the establishment of a park and a pond, and the construction of a large market and a modern-style slaughterhouse.
4. He worked to open and expand the streets, and named the largest street after the Libyan Arab martyr (Omar Al-Mukhtar), despite the Italian Consulate’s protest against this naming.
Among his pen works:
1- Classify a treatise on rights.
2- Explanation of Al-Ahkam magazine by Ali Haider, and its translation from Turkish to Arabic.
3- Major criminal cases.
4- A message about the killing of French General Kleber.
