Student Bashar Shawar from the Faculty of Information Technology and Computer Engineering at Palestine Polytechnic University and student Yafa Abdel Rahim from the Faculty of Business Administration at Birzeit University won first place in the Arab Academy for Innovation competition, which was held in Doha in the State of Qatar, for their innovation of the Salamat-E application, which is a phone application for travelers. It helps to spread health knowledge and prevent infectious diseases during travel and maintain a health file for each user, so the traveler can obtain the necessary information about disease prevention and vaccinations that he needs when traveling to a specific country.
The project was qualified from among more than 30 projects participating in the competition and more than 165 students from 30 countries, where guidance was provided by a network of international mentors specialized in supporting and developing emerging ideas.
For the second time in a row, the Technology Park contributed to networking and providing the opportunity for Palestinian pioneering youth to participate in the Arab Academy for Innovation program, which was held at the Qatar Science and Technology Park - Doha - Qatar and extended over a period of three weeks from December 31, 2018 until January 15, 2019. This is in cooperation with the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), which is a member of the Research and Development Sector of the Qatar Foundation, in partnership with the European Academy of Innovation.
The Arab Academy for Innovation received more than forty Palestinian applicants through the Technology Park. The Technology Park also facilitated all necessary procedures to provide the opportunity for Palestinian students, as eight of them were qualified from various universities in the country. They participated in six different teams, so that the Salamat_E application team, consisting of 5 multinational individuals, was obtained. On first place. The “Stone EF” project, owned by engineer Areen Nasser Al-Din from Palestine Polytechnic University, was also classified as one of the best participating projects for its support of the environment and reducing water pollution. The project aims to use waste solid materials to recycle them into low-cost building stone due to the high demand for natural stone, which may not be available in the coming years.
The Arab Academy program focused on several technological concepts, such as smart phone applications that seek to facilitate an individual’s life, whether in the field of health, waste management, logistical operations, etc. In addition to technology, the Internet of Things, and business programs. He also worked to encourage the transformation of students’ creative ideas into actual projects that can be implemented after studying and developing their business model.
It is worth noting that the Arab Innovation Academy is the first initiative of its kind in the Arab world that brings together students from various Arab regions.
The program provided an opportunity for participants to learn from actual experiences on how to establish their startup companies in three weeks. The program seeks to increase awareness about technological entrepreneurship, stimulate the process of creating new business projects, and train the largest number of young talents to launch new technological products and services that will be of benefit to the local and regional market. The program also helped participants benefit from a network of Arab and international trainers and specialists in supporting and developing their emerging ideas and projects.
