The two young Palestinian women, Carmel Shehadeh and Jana Rasras, tried to make a mark in finding solutions to one of the problems facing their society and environment.
As part of their graduation project, two computer systems engineering students at Palestine Polytechnic University, Carmel and Jana, recorded an innovation for a mobile robot capable of locating toxic gas leaks inside buildings.
The innovation is based on building a smart system on a mobile robot to make it capable of identifying locations of toxic gas leaks. It consists of a mobile robot, a scanner to build a map of the place and avoid obstacles while walking, systems to control the system, and others to read gas concentrations from the surrounding environment.
Carmel Shehadeh told Al Awda News Network, “The importance of the project lies in that it increases the safety and security rate in facilities that contain large quantities of gas, including hospitals, factories, and others.”
Carmel adds, “This project is the first of its kind in Palestine and is distinguished from other projects in other countries. That it be produced on the ground at the lowest cost with the ability to compete in terms of quality and efficiency.”
And like any project; There is no doubt that it will face some challenges before it comes out in its final form. Carmel and Jana faced several challenges during the preparation of the innovation, the most prominent of which was the problem of dealing with gas, as it is affected by weather factors such as humidity, wind, and temperature.
The two young women are confident in the ability of their project to compete locally, regionally, and internationally as well, as they participated in several local conferences, including the Research and Creativity Conference at Kadoorie University, during which they achieved fourth place nationally.
