Information

Arwa Ashour - Homeland - Gaza: Engineer Abdul Qader Bakr (28 years old) was able to succeed in the process of extracting vitamins from algae using simple tools by creating a miniature farm of spirulina algae, which is the first in Palestine.

Bakr told Watan that the idea of “spirulina” came from following some scientific publications about the nature and benefits of this algae and its uses in human nutrition and biofertilizers for plants and animals. Which prompted him to search in depth for her.

Bakr added, "After reading and following up, I found that this species has large farms in countries around the world such as America, Malaysia, and Egypt, which encouraged me to think about establishing a similar farm in Gaza. So I contacted external specialists to provide me with information about the farming mechanism, especially since it requires a specific climate and special tools."

He noted that the study indicated the possibility of growing it in the Gaza Strip, noting that he researched in local markets the extent of citizens’ interest in purchasing spirulina algae.

Regarding the stages of algae production, Bakr points out that the production process goes through several stages, starting with the installation of the special solution, then waiting 48 hours for the water to homogenize with it, and then the cultivation process comes through adding the living material to the solution, and the process of division and density begins, followed by the construction process. Photosynthesis of algae, and then the harvest stage.

Algae has several uses on the human level, as nutritional supplements, fertilizers for plants, and food for animals to strengthen their immunity.
Bakr pointed out that he found that many citizens import it as a raw product by mail from Malaysia and America at a high cost. As a result of the sector's lack of this product.

Regarding the most important difficulties that Bakr faced, he mentioned that there was difficulty in bringing raw samples into the Gaza Strip and acclimatizing them in light of the lack of capabilities due to the siege, in addition to the lack of heating inside his small farm, which is considered a major challenge, especially since the algae needs a certain temperature.

Bakr aspires to have this experience generalized nationwide and produced on large farms, thus becoming a source of livelihood for a group of unemployed youth.
