Ramallah (West Bank) (Reuters) - Under the slogan “I am Palestinian,” the 11th Screens Women’s Cinema Festival will be launched on Tuesday simultaneously in Ramallah and the Gaza Strip, with the participation of 10 films by young female directors from the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza.

The festival is organized by the Shashat Foundation, which was launched in 2005 with the aim of developing the capabilities of the young Palestinian feminist film sector.

The participating films are (I Am Palestinian) by director Fidaa Nasr, (Sababa Kilimanjaro) by director Maysaa Al-Shaer, (The Shepherdess) by director Fidaa Ataya, (Warqat al-Dawali) by director Dina Amin, (One Day) by director Asmaa Al-Masry, and (Dead Land) by director Amjad Hab Al-Rih. (Ghoul) by director Alaa Al-Desouki, (Sard) by director Zeina Ramadan, (Silk Threads) by director Walaa Saada, and (Keffiyeh) by director Afnan Al-Qatrawi.

The “I am Palestinian” film group comes within the “Let’s See a Film” project, which is implemented by the Shashat Foundation in partnership with the Association of Female University Graduates in Gaza and the Sunflower Foundation for Human and Environmental Protection. It is a cultural-societal project extending over three years, with major funding from the European Union.

The festival administration says that the participating films “examine the subjective dimension of belonging and identity and focus on complex expressions of the multiple lives of Palestinian women, which give creative and subjective depth to cinematic perceptions about the relationship with people, things, feelings, places, stories and relationships.”

Alia Arsaghli, director of the festival, said in a press conference on Sunday, “The Screens Festival for Women’s Cinema in Palestine is the most continuous among women’s cinema festivals in the Arab world, and this is a great achievement for Palestinian cinematic work.”

She added that the festival “complements the mission of the Women’s Cinema Screens Foundation in supporting young Palestinian feminist production and creativity, and providing opportunities for young female directors to produce Palestinian cinematic culture.”

The festival's films are scheduled to later tour several places in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
