Taghreed Al-Khudari is a Palestinian journalist. She worked as a visiting scholar in the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment , where her research focused on the future of Gaza . She is also a 2010 Fellow of the Heinrich Böll Foundation . She works as an editor at fanack.com.
From 2001 to 2009, Al-Khodary worked as a correspondent for The New York Times from Gaza. I stopped working for the newspaper shortly after Electronic Intifada announced that Ethan Brunner, the New York Times' Jerusalem bureau chief , had a son serving in the Israeli army. [4] The Times decided not to remove Brunner from his position, [5] while Al-Khodary resigned, saying she felt it was "unwise" for her to stay. “It was a very precarious situation,” she said at a panel discussion at the Palestine Center in Washington, D.C. “It’s very sensitive and I was really disappointed that [The New York Times] made that decision but they understand why I was leaving.” [6]
Background
Al-Khodari was born in Gaza and holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the American University in Cairo and a master’s degree in mass communication from Murray State University , which she joined as a Fulbright scholar . [7] [8] Al-Khodary later returned to the United States for a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University in 2006 [9] [10] and again in 2010 as a Heinrich Boell Fellow and a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace . Her career
Al-Khudary worked as a radio correspondent for Voice of America . She is a correspondent for Al Jazeera TV , and a television news correspondent for LBC (Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation), in addition to working on documentaries for National Geographic, PBS (US), ITV (UK) and CBC (Canada). In 2010, she led a three-week mentorship program on election coverage for journalists in northern Sudan under the auspices of the United Nations Development Program and the Fogo Media Institute of Linnaeus University. Al-Khudari came to public attention during the 2008-2009 Gaza War , when Israel banned reporters from crossing the Gaza-Israel border, and she was among the few reporters to report from Gaza. Taghrid describes herself as “among the very few ‘objective’ reporters” covering the conflict. [7] She has been praised for her “in-depth and balanced coverage” of the conflict. [7] Taghrid feels that her identity as a Palestinian was instrumental in her reporting in Gaza because she was able to “ Live the story.” [6]
After it emerged that Ethan Brunner, the New York Times' Jerusalem bureau chief, had a son serving as a conscript in the Israel Defense Forces , and that The New York Times refused to fire him after the announcement, Al-Khodari decided to leave her job at the New York Times.
