Information

Mazen al-Tumeizi ( July 5, 1979 in Idhna - September 12, 2004 in Baghdad ) was a Palestinian journalist who was killed by American helicopter gunfire on camera while covering a helicopter accident on Haifa Street in Baghdad , Iraq. The camera recorded his last moments. The tape of his death sparked an increase in concern among journalists in Iraq , as well as anger in the Arab world .
Al-Tamizi worked as a Palestinian correspondent for the Saudi- owned news networks Al-Arabiya and Al- Ekhbariya . He was the third Al Arabiya journalist killed in Iraq at the hands of American forces , after journalist Ali Al-Khatib and photographer Ali Abdel Aziz .

Feedback

Mazen Al-Tamizi was among 11 civilians killed in a Haifa Street helicopter accident on September 12, 2004, after fighting between Iraqi insurgents and American soldiers when an American Apache helicopter was called in to destroy a burning American Bradley armored fighting vehicle to prevent the Iraqis from looting its weapons and ammunition.

International news agencies reported that Al-Tamizi began filming the site of the event three hours after US forces were ambushed, a claim disputed by the US military . The official military report places the time of the helicopter strike just 40 minutes after the Bradley ambush, and states that the airstrike on Bradley was "to prevent looting and harm to the Iraqi people."

Naim Tubasi , head of the Palestinian Journalists Union, said that the killing of Al-Tamezi was a deliberate targeting of Arab journalists in Iraq , and described it as “another American crime in Iraq.” [3] Najwa Qassem , an Al Arabiya anchor and former colleague of Al-Tamizi, responded to American claims that Al-Tamizi was “one of the terrorists” by calling them “really surprising and sad.”
