Artistic biography

The artist Hazma was born in Akka, Palestine, in 1933. Following the Nakba War in 1948, he took refuge with his family in Latakia, Syria, and in his father’s café. When he was five years old, his artistic talent appeared when he sat watching a European artist while she was working, and there his talent developed. A student of Mr. Abdul Rahman Qabbani, Hazma joined the Artistic Music Club in Latakia, where he was able to participate in the club’s artistic activities. In 1952, he won the Artistic Music Club Award and it was received by Mustafa Farroukh . In 1960, he received a scholarship from the German University of Leipzig , from which he graduated in 1967. He obtained German citizenship, lived in Germany , and held multiple art exhibitions in Germany, through which he highlighted his Palestinian narrative in art.

Many of his works were used as Palestinian stamps , posters, and an external image for Palestinian Affairs magazine [2] . Among his paintings are the painting “ The Intifada, ” “Waiting,” “Jerusalem after the Rain,” and “Palestine, the Country of My Dreams.” In 1979, he was elected a member of the General Secretariat of the Union of Fine Artists and became its external relations officer. Between the years 1968-1974, he worked for East Berlin Radio as an official for German-Arab friendship and a broadcaster for the Art and Literature program. He worked with the Red Cross in Berlin between the years 1974-1991, drawing patients’ faces for doctors to diagnose them. With meticulous and patient drawing works, he was elected to the Palestinian National Fine Arts Committee at UNESCO in 1998.
