Akrama Said Abdullah Sabri was born in the city of Qalqilya in the West Bank in 1939. He is married and has three sons and two daughters. He completed his primary and secondary education in Nablus, graduating from Al-Salahiya School in Nablus. He earned a bachelor's degree in Islamic Law and Arabic Language from the University of Baghdad in 1963, a master's degree in Islamic Law from An-Najah National University in Nablus in 1989, and a doctorate in Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 2001. He worked as a teacher at Al-Aqsa Islamic Secondary School between 1963 and 1968, then as its principal between 1968 and 1974. He served as Director of Preaching and Guidance in the West Bank between 1974 and 1994, and as Director of the College of Islamic Sciences in Jerusalem in 1986. He lectured at the Faculty of Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion at Al-Quds University between 1992 and 1994, and as a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Qur'an and Islamic Studies in Jerusalem, the Ibrahimiyya College in Jerusalem, and the Modern College in Ramallah. He also served as Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories between [years missing in original text]. (1994-2006), and he has been the preacher of Al-Aqsa Mosque since 1973, and he was also a judge in the Sharia Court of Appeal.
Sabri practiced institutional and social activity in the city of Jerusalem. He headed the Hilal Al-Quds Club in 1980, the Al-Razi Society for Culture and Society, and the Jerusalem Mosques Restoration Committee. He is a founding member of a number of institutions, bodies and councils, including: the Council of Scholars and Preachers in Palestine and its president in 1992, the Supreme Islamic Authority in Jerusalem and its president in 1998, the Supreme Fatwa Council in Palestine, the Al-Aqsa Islamic Schools and Kindergartens Foundation, the Assembly of Sharia Jurists in America, the Islamic House of Mercy Charity for the Elderly, the Muslim Youth Association in Jerusalem, the World Islamic Mosque Conference Association in Mecca, the Association of Levant Scholars, and he is a member of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy in Jeddah, and of the World Association of Al-Azhar University Graduates.
Sabri has been active for years in activities defending Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem in the face of the Judaization and Israelization projects led by the occupying state and extremist Zionist groups. He participated with those stationed inside the mosque in their vigil, and contributed to the success of a large number of official and unofficial conferences in Palestine and abroad that aim to mobilize Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims to defend Al-Aqsa and the holy sites. He is hosted by visual, audio and written media to talk about this matter continuously, and he participated in repelling attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque since the incident of its burning in 1969, through the Al-Aqsa massacre in 1990, until the electronic gates uprising in 2017.
He participated in a number of local, regional and international scientific conferences and seminars, and he published a number of books, including: Our Right in Palestine (1978), Memoirs on Hadith (three parts), Lights on the Miraculous Nature of the Holy Qur’an (1996), Enlightenment in Creed and Interpretation (2000), Renewal and Modernization (2007), Islamic Endowment between Theory and Practice (2008), The Oath in Islamic Judiciary (2009), Jerusalem Fatwas (2016). He also published dozens of research papers and studies, and he is a former editor-in-chief of Huda Al-Islam magazine.
Sabri has been suffering harassment from the occupation forces and their intelligence services since 2000. His house has been repeatedly raided and searched, he has been summoned, and several decisions have been issued against him to ban him from Al-Aqsa Mosque and to prevent him from traveling. He was injured by a rubber bullet during the electronic gates uprising in 2017.
