Hamdi Saeed Madoukh was born in Gaza City on October 1, 1924. He is married and has eleven sons and daughters. He studied the basic stage in the schools of Jaffa, and obtained a license in the seven readings from the path of Al-Shatibiyyah from the Sheikhdom of the Reciters in Damascus in 1952, and a license in the seven readings from the path of Al-Shatibiyyah in Iraq in 1954. He worked as an imam and preacher in one of the mosques of Yabroud in Syria, and as a professor at the Islamic Scientific College in the city of Amman, and as a preacher and mufti for the city of Ma’an and its district, and as an imam, reciter and preacher for the Abu Khadra Mosque in Gaza, then for the Al-Nasr Mosque in Gaza between (1962-2000), and he worked as an inspector of the Qur’anic centers affiliated with the Ministry of Endowments in the Gaza Strip, and as a legal authorised marriage officiant, and as a professor of the Holy Qur’an at the Al-Azhar Institute in Gaza between (1974-1995), and as a professor of the Holy Qur’an and its sciences at the Islamic University in Gaza in 1978, and at Al-Azhar University in Gaza in 1991, and he was appointed as the Sheikh of the Palestinian Reciters in 1995.

He participated in the defense of Jaffa during the Nakba events of 1948, and was one of the spokespeople for the Palestinian refugees in Syria after the Nakba. He was a member of the Tawhid Association in the Gaza Strip, and practiced preaching and guidance in the mosques of the Strip and in the occupied territories of 1948. He participated in the establishment of the House of the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah in the Strip in 1992, and supervised the circles for memorizing the Holy Qur’an, the courses of recitation and intonation, and the selection of committees of memorizers of the Holy Qur’an in the Gaza Strip. He headed some of the delegations of contestants nominated to participate in the competitions for memorizing the Holy Qur’an in Saudi Arabia.

He began composing poetry while he was a student in school, and wrote poems for religious and national occasions. He authored the book “The Concise and Useful Guide to the Knowledge of the Qur’an and the Principles of Recitation” (1974), which was adopted as a curriculum in some Palestinian universities and institutes in the Gaza Strip.

He suffered greatly in his life; he and his family were displaced from Jaffa to Lebanon during the Nakba of 1948, then he left for Syria, and then its government exiled him to Jordan. He died on August 9, 2000.
