The veteran trade unionist Adel Ibrahim Ghanem was born in Nablus in 1920 and studied at the Hashemite and Salahiyya schools. He worked as a stonecutter, which allowed him to work in all the cities of Palestine. He was elected Secretary of the General Construction Workers Union in Nablus in 1959 and was elected a member of the Jordanian Trade Union Federation. He contributed to the founding of the Nablus Construction Workers Cooperative Society, eventually becoming its General Manager.
Following the 1967 defeat and the occupation, he became a member of the National Guidance Committee. He was elected to the Nablus Municipal Council from 1976 to 1982. He was then elected Secretary-General of the Federation of Trade Unions in the West Bank (1977-1986). He was one of the founders of the "Al-Minbar" (The Platform) and the Democratic Construction Movement. He was also one of the founders of the Stone and Marble Sector Union in Palestine and served as its Secretary – Nablus Branch. He passed away on Wednesday morning, December 14, 2011.
