Issam Taher Al-Barqawi, or as he is called Abu Muhammad Al-Maqdisi, a Jordanian of Palestinian origin, is considered one of the most prominent theorists of the Salafi-jihadi movement. The Jordanian authorities have imprisoned him many times because of his views. He was considered a teacher for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi when they were brought together in prison.

He is Abu Muhammad Essam bin Muhammad bin Taher Al-Hafi Al-Otaibi. He likes to be called Asim (not Bassam, relative to the name of one of the Companions). As for the inclusion of Barqawi in his name, it is relative to the village of Barqa in Palestine at birth, then Al-Maqdisi in fame, Al-Hafi and then Al-Otaibi in lineage. He is from the village of Barqa, in Nablus, where he was born in 1378 AH corresponding to 1959 AD, and to it he is related to Barqawi, not to Barqa Otaiba, as he is from Al-Ruqa.

He left Palestine three or four years after his birth and moved with his family to Kuwait, where he stayed until he completed his high school studies. At the end of his high school studies, he committed himself to Islamic groups. Then he studied science at the University of Mosul in northern Iraq in response to his father’s desire. As for his wish, he was to study Sharia law in Medina to study under the sheikhs in the Prophet’s Mosque. He wrote to some sheikhs to fulfill this wish. Iraq after three years, and he traveled to Medina for that, and moved in the Hijaz, and there he had contact and good contact with the students of knowledge, and some of the sheikhs from whom he took some of the keys to knowledge from those who did not heal his thirst for what the youth were looking for in terms of insight into reality and the revelation of the correct legal rulings on him, and the clear position on Rulers of time and the clear way to change the reality of the nation. So he devoted himself to reading the books of Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and his student Ibn al-Qayyim, and the books of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and his students, children and grandchildren from the imams of the Najdi call, which he first became acquainted with from an old copy of the Sunni pearls in the library of the Prophet’s Mosque, so he devoted himself to them for a long time, and these specific books had a great impact In his direction after that, one of the fruits of this devotion was his first important writing, which is his book Millat Ibrahim, in which it appears clear that he was influenced by the imams of the Najdi call and their writings.
