Information

Shawkat Zaid Al-Kilani (1929-2002) was born in Nablus . He received his education at Al-Najah School in Nablus and Al-Ibrahimiya School in Cairo . He studied general medicine at Alexandria University and graduated in 1957. He worked as a doctor in the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health during the years (1959-1962). He was granted fellowship membership in the Academy of Medicine in Vienna in 1962. He specialized in internal medicine in Australia and Germany . He completed his studies and obtained a diploma in public health and tropical diseases from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom in 1964. 

He returned to Palestine and opened a private clinic in Nablus, and became a member of the first Palestinian National Council in 1964. He worked as the chief medical director of UNRWA until 1989, and was among those who contributed to the development of An-Najah College in Nablus into a university in 1977. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of An-Najah University , a member of the Board of Trustees of the Arab Intellectual Forum Society in Jerusalem during the years (1978-1985), a member of the Palestinian Doctors Syndicate, and one of the founders of the Medical Society for the Care of Children. He was elected President of An-Najah National University in 1990, a member of the Executive Committee of the Council for Higher Education, and was elected Vice President of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Nablus.

He died of cancer on October 17, 2002 and was buried in Jordan .
