Ibrahim Shehadeh Ibrahim Al-Masri ( Abu Samer , January 5, 1949 in Hebron - June 5 , 2023 in Ramallah ) was a Palestinian activist and politician and one of the founders of the Fatah movement .

His life

He completed his preparatory and secondary education in schools in Yatta and Hebron, and graduated from high school in 1969. He then left for Jordan and joined the ranks of the Fatah movement there. He obtained a BA in Geography from Damascus University . At university, he was an activist in the Fatah movement and a member of the Palestinian Students Union, representing them in many Arab and international conferences. 

Ibrahim Al-Masri participated in the revolution in Lebanon in 1973 and returned to Syria, but the Syrian intelligence deported him to Egypt in 1975. He then moved to Lebanon and remained there until the invasion of Beirut in 1982. He then left for Tunisia and joined the Palestinian revolution there and worked in the Foreign Relations Commission of the Fatah movement. With the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority in 1994, he returned from Tunisia to Palestine and was appointed Director of Intelligence with the rank of Major General in the Hebron Governorate. He then moved to the leadership of the intelligence . He was elected a member of the Revolutionary Council of the Fatah movement in 2009 and was appointed to the Palestinian National and Central Councils . 

He is married and has two children: Samer, the head of the Jericho Public Prosecution Office , and Reem, who works at the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo .

His death

Al-Masry died on June 5, 2023, at the Consulting Hospital in Ramallah, following a terminal illness. An official farewell ceremony was held for him at the presidential headquarters (the Muqata'a), where President Mahmoud Abbas , the official and civil Palestinian leadership, and the security, national, and popular forces could bid farewell. The funeral procession set off at 11:00 a.m. from the Consulting Hospital in Ramallah toward the Muqata'a. The procession then headed toward the city of Yatta, where prayers were performed over his pure body in the Grand Mosque in the center of the city. He was then escorted to his final resting place in the family cemetery. 

In a phone call with his son, Samer, President Mahmoud Abbas offered his condolences. “His Excellency praised the deceased’s virtues, his national role, and his struggle to serve his people and homeland, and his defense of the independent Palestinian national decision. He expressed his deepest condolences and sincere sympathy, asking God Almighty to bestow His vast mercy upon him and to grant him a place in His spacious gardens, and to inspire his family and relatives with patience and solace.”

Mahmoud Al-Aloul, Deputy Chairman of the Fatah Movement, mourned him and said: “ The late fighter (Abu Samer Al-Masry) was one of the pioneers of those who joined the Palestinian revolution, and one of the prominent leaders of the General Union of Palestinian Students in Beirut, and participated in its battles, which he fought valiantly in defense of the national project. In addition to that, he played a role in establishing the General Intelligence Service, adding that he remained committed to the independent national decision, performing his duties towards his people and their cause, pledging to continue the struggle until the national rights of our people are seized, and the independent, sovereign Palestinian state is established with Jerusalem as its capital. ”

Rawhi Fattouh, head of the National Council, mourned him and said: “ The Palestinian National Council and the Palestinian National Liberation Movement, Fatah, in this great loss, offer their sincere condolences and sympathy to his small family, Umm Samer, Samer, and Reem, his family and relatives, and to all his sons and extended family, members of Fatah, wherever they may be, and to all members of the National Council, and to the sons of our great Palestinian people. ”
