Information
Zaid Al-Kilani is a Jordanian physician of Palestinian origin from the city of Nazareth. He obtained a diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Ireland and a fellowship from the Royal College in London. He was the first in the region to establish a center for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), commonly known as “test-tube babies,” in 1983.
He is the founder of the Jordanian Society for Fertility and Genetics and served as its first president in 1997. Dr. Al-Kilani introduced several assisted reproductive technologies to the Middle East, including in vitro fertilization, the study and diagnosis of embryos prior to uterine transfer (preimplantation genetic diagnosis), and in vitro maturation of oocytes.
He later established a department dedicated to the study of genetic diseases and laboratory embryo screening to select healthy embryos, in cooperation with the Center for Human Genetics in Michigan, USA. This department is considered the first of its kind in the region.
Dr. Al-Kilani also participated, along with colleagues from Scotland and France, in the discovery of genetic mutations in a Jordanian family. This discovery was published in the prestigious American Journal of Human Genetics. He has contributed to the authorship and editing of several scientific and medical books in English focusing on advances in infertility treatment, embryo fertilization, and gender selection.
Additionally, he developed a medical device to assist in embryo transfer to the mother’s uterus, which is manufactured in Germany by the company Storz under the name Jordan–Kilani.
