Ahmed Youssef Al-Saftawi is a Polish doctor of Palestinian origin from the city of Gaza. He began studying medicine in 1994 in Poland, later completing his specialization in general surgery. He then obtained a PhD in Hand Surgery and specialized in limb transplantation, particularly upper-limb transplantation.
He was part of the medical team that performed the first double arm transplant on a Polish soldier who had lost both hands due to an explosion. The donor was a Polish woman who donated her arms after her death. This operation was considered the first successful arm transplant in Poland and the third in Europe.
Dr. Al-Saftawi and his medical team have performed eight similar hand transplantation surgeries to date.
