Information

Abdul Khaliq Hussein Yaghmour was born in Hebron in 1912. He studied the primary stage in Hebron schools, and the secondary stage at the Arab College in Jerusalem, from which he obtained his high school diploma in 1928. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in law from Cairo University in Egypt in 1947. He worked in the professions of education and law.
Yaghmour joined the ranks of the national movement early on, participated in the Great Palestinian Revolt of 1936, became an advisor to the commander of the Hebron region in the revolt, Abdul Halim al-Julani, in 1937, and was appointed secretary of the National Committee in Hebron between (1947-1949). He was interested in institutional work; He participated in the founding of the Wounded Fighter Association in 1949, the University Graduates Association in Hebron in 1953, the General Union of Charitable Societies in Jordan in 1959, and the Islamic Charitable Society in 1961. He also became involved in party, parliamentary, and union life. He joined the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party at the beginning of the 1950s, and was elected as a member of the Jordanian House of Representatives for the Hebron Governorate in 1956. He was active in political opposition to alliances, especially the Baghdad Pact in 1956. He was elected as the deputy head of the Jordanian Bar Association between (1960-1962), and as mayor of Hebron between (1962-1964). He contributed to the founding of the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1964, and participated in drafting its Palestinian National Charter. He became a member of its first Executive Committee and its first National Council. He was re-elected as a member of the Executive Committee during the third session in 1966 and the fourth session in 1968. He contributed to the founding of the Palestinian Planning Council. He joined one of the organization’s arms in 1968, became a member of it, and a member of the Central Council, and took over the responsibility of the Popular Organization Department within the organization. He was among the members of the Executive Committee who objected to Ahmed Shuqairi’s bureaucracy and his unilateral decision-making and demanded his resignation from the presidency of the Executive Committee. He also opposed the PLO’s acceptance of entering the settlement process, and resigned from his membership in the Palestinian National Council in protest against that.
Yaghmour made contributions to legal writing, and several studies in this field were published by him. He also participated in drafting the code of professional ethics and rules of conduct for the Jordanian Bar Association in 1978.
He suffered during his struggle; he was arrested by the Jordanian authorities in 1957, his parliamentary immunity was removed, his membership in the Jordanian parliament was cancelled in January 1958, and he was kept in the desert prison of Al-Jafr until 1959.
He died in Jordan on November 18, 1984, and was buried in Amman.
