Information

Fatima Abu Shanab studied international relations at George Mason University, USA, then pursued a master's degree in "Relations between Muslims and Christians" in the liberal studies program at Georgetown University in America. She worked as an assistant researcher in various research centers, such as the “Becky Refutation for Religious Freedom” organization, the “Woodrow Wilson” International Center for Scholars, and the American Congress. She also works now as a specialist in international relations in the Turkish presidency.

She is the daughter of the former deputy in the Turkish parliament, who was the first veiled female deputy, as he won the list of the Virtue Party led by former Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, but she faced great difficulties in her country.

At that time, she was expelled from the session because of her wearing the hijab. Then, 11 days after she entered the parliament, her Turkish citizenship was revoked, and the court issued a decision banning the Virtue Party and banning five of its leaders, including Marwa Qawuqji, from practicing politics for 5 years. However, the Inter-Parliamentary Union issued a statement stating the illegality of dropping the prosecution and Turkish citizenship from Marwa Qawuqji.

On that day, Qawuqji left for the United States to complete her studies at Harvard University, and taught at the Faculty of International Relations at George Washington University. Then her name reappeared in the media in late July 2017, when the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed her as ambassador to her country in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Marwa's father (Fatima's grandfather) is Imam Youssef at the Richardson Mosque (Dallas) and one of the founders of the Islamic community there. He immigrated to America because his daughter was prevented from entering school with the hijab, and he has a strong relationship with the Palestinian community in the city. Marwa married the American of Palestinian origin, Ali Ahmed Abu Shanab. Her sister Maryam also works in the Turkish presidential palace, and her aunt Rawda is a deputy for Istanbul in the Turkish parliament.
