Information
Born in Khan Yunis in 1942, he joined Fatah in 1967, rising through its leadership ranks to become a member of the Central Committee in 1992.
He was arrested by Israel, dismissed from his job due to security reasons, and banned from traveling outside the Gaza Strip by the Israeli occupation during the First Intifada.
He served as Minister of Housing in the first Palestinian government formed by the Palestinian Authority on Palestinian soil.
In 1996, he was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and headed the Department of National and International Relations and then the Department of Refugee Affairs. He became
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Al-Azhar University in 2002.
He was assigned by President Mahmoud Abbas to head the Supreme Leadership Committee of the Fatah Movement in the Gaza Strip after the events of June 14, to follow up on all the movement's activities. He was also assigned to head the National Action Authority, which is an extension and arm of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
