Information

Born in Rafah, Gaza Strip, in 1949 to a refugee family from the village of Barqa.
He studied at the UNRWA schools in Rafah and two years of primary school in Al-Arish, Egypt. He completed his high school diploma in Zarqa, Jordan, in 1970.
He holds a BA in English Literature and a MA in Political Science.
He joined the Fatah Storm Forces in Jordan in 1968.
He graduated from the Military College in Iraq in 1969 and joined the revolutionary bases in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
He was active in student and organizational work and held several positions in the General Union of Palestinian Students and the Fatah movement.
He was elected to the Revolutionary Council at the Fifth General Conference of the Fatah movement in 1989.
Member of the Palestinian National Council since 1983, and member of the Central Council since 1996.
In 1996, he was elected as a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council for the Rafah district, and was elected Secretary of the Legislative Council from 1996 to 2003. He
was appointed Minister of Agriculture in 2003.
In 2004, he was elected Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
He served as President of the Palestinian National Authority for sixty days following the death of President Yasser Arafat until the election of President Mahmoud Abbas.
In 2006, President Mahmoud Abbas appointed him as the Personal Representative of the President of the Palestinian National Authority and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Member of the Central Committee of the Fatah Movement/Commissioner for Foreign Relations.
