Yasser Hassan Hussein Abdul Majeed Amr (1930 in Dura - January 24, 2002 in Amman) was a Palestinian jurist and politician . He was the first to hold the Ministry of Education and Higher Education portfolio in successive Palestinian National Authority governments .

Early life and education

He was born in 1930 in the town of Dura in the Hebron Governorate , where he grew up and completed his school education. He joined Al-Nahda College in Jerusalem and worked as a teacher between 1951 and 1955. Later, in 1960, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from Damascus University , and then in 1961, he obtained a license to practice law .

Practical life

In 1962, Yasser Amr became a member of the Jordanian Parliament.
In 1967 he was elected a member of the Jordanian Bar Association.
In 1968, the Israeli authorities deported him from the West Bank to Jordan. 
In 1969 he was elected as a member of the Permanent Bureau of the Arab Lawyers Union. 

In 1985, he was commissioned to establish the Palestinian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science , having previously headed the Education Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization. 

In 1994, he was assigned the duties of Minister of Education and Higher Education in Yasser Arafat's first government.
