Tayseer Al-Tamimi (1952-) is a Palestinian judge and politician . He was the Chief Justice of Palestine and the President of the Supreme Council of Sharia Judiciary. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Hebron University .
Early life and education
Tayseer Rajab Hamed Bayoud al-Tamimi was born near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the Old City of Hebron, south of the West Bank, on October 21, 1952, to a family descended from the noble companion Tamim ibn Aws al-Dari . He received his school education in Jerusalem , Jericho , Irbid , and Bethlehem, where his father, Sheikh Rajab Bayoud al-Tamimi, worked as a Sharia judge and was the first to receive a doctorate in Hebron. In 1975, he obtained a bachelor's degree from Al-Azhar University in Sharia and Law. In 1996, he obtained a master's degree in Islamic jurisprudence and legislation from An-Najah National University in Nablus . Later, in 2006, he obtained a doctorate in Islamic jurisprudence and its principles from the University Institute of Da'wa for Graduate Studies in Beirut .
Practical life
Tayseer al-Tamimi served as a Sharia judge in Bethlehem and then Hebron in 1986. In 1994, Yasser Arafat appointed him inspector of Sharia courts. Later, from 1997 to 1999, he served as acting Chief Justice. In April 1998, al-Tamimi was tasked with forming a committee to work on developing an effective personal status law in the Palestinian territories “as a fundamental step in establishing a Palestinian state.” In March 2000, Arafat formally appointed him deputy Chief Justice.
In 2002, he was appointed Chief Justice of Palestine and President of the Supreme Sharia Court. In 2003, he was appointed President of the Supreme Council of Sharia Judiciary. Later, in 2010, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas referred him to early retirement.
Freedom and Independence Party
In December 2012, Al-Tamimi founded the Freedom and Independence Party (Haris) to defend sanctities and constants.

During a seminar in November 2001, Tamimi engaged in a heated debate with the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Sheikh Ikrima Sabri , regarding reforms in the Sharia system, particularly their positions on the age of marriage. Tamimi advocated raising the legal age of marriage to 18, while Sabri favored the traditional Islamic Sharia position that a minor may marry upon reaching puberty.
On December 21, 2012, Tayseer al-Tamimi's car was burned next to his home in Jabal Abu Rumman, Hebron.
Books
Tayseer Al-Tamimi wrote several books, most of which dealt with contemporary Islamic issues, including: “The Waqf of Tamim Al-Dari: The First Feudalism in Islam,” “A Journey of Dialogue,” and “Religious, Sectarian, and National Pluralism in Islam.”
