Information

Mohammed Ahmed Yassin was born in the city of Tyre in southern Lebanon on September 21, 1953, to a Palestinian refugee family originally from the depopulated village of Al-Kabri in the occupied Acre district. He was married and had one son and five daughters. He completed his primary education at the Al-Qasimiya and Al-Shajara schools run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and his secondary education at Al-Ittihad School, from which he graduated in 1971. He then enrolled at the Lebanese University to study political science. He completed a four-month military course for company commanders in the Soviet Union in 1979 and a political course in Bulgaria in 1981.

Yassin joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command in 1970, and defected from it in 1976, announcing his joining the Palestinian Liberation Front. He became its military commander in the Tyre region, and participated in repelling the Israeli attack on Lebanon in 1978. He was responsible for the Front’s elements who worked behind enemy lines, and assumed organizational responsibility for the Front in the Bekaa and Baalbek in 1982. He was the Front’s commander in the mountain battles between (1983-1984), and the Front’s commander in southern Lebanon. He became the deputy commander of the Front in Lebanon in 1985, and then assumed responsibility for it in Lebanon since 1988.

Yassin opposes negotiations with the occupying state and considers this a threat to Palestinian rights. He believes that the enemy should only be negotiated with regarding its complete withdrawal from the land. He emphasizes that the division is one of the repercussions of the Oslo Accords, and that the return is linked to liberation. He considers normalization a betrayal of Palestinian and Arab rights.

Yassin was detained by the Lebanese authorities for nine months following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982.
