Information

Taghreed Al-Khodari is a Palestinian journalist. She worked as a visiting scholar in the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment, where her research focused on the future of Gaza. She is also a 2010 Fellow of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. She works as an editor for fanack.com.

From 2001 to 2009, Al-Khodary reported for The New York Times from Gaza. She quit working for the paper shortly after Electronic Intifada announced that Ethan Bronner, the New York Times' Jerusalem bureau chief, had a son serving in the Israeli army. The Times decided not to remove Brunner, while Al-Khodary resigned, saying she felt it was "unwise" for her to stay. “It was a very precarious situation,” she said in a panel discussion at the Palestine Center in Washington, D.C. “It’s very sensitive and I was really disappointed that [The New York Times] made that decision but they understand why I left.”

background
Al-Khodary was born in Gaza and holds a BA in Communications from the American University in Cairo and a MA in Mass Communication from Murray State University, where she is a Fulbright Scholar. Al-Khodari later returned to the United States for a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University in 2006 and again in 2010 as the Heinrich Boell Fellow and Visiting Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

her career
Al-Khodary worked as a radio reporter for Voice of America. Correspondent for Al Jazeera TV, and TV news reporter for LBC (Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation), in addition to working on documentaries for National Geographic, PBS (USA), ITV (UK) and CBC (Canada). In 2010, she led a three-week mentorship program on election coverage for journalists in Northern Sudan sponsored by the United Nations Development Program and the Linnaeus University's Vogo Media Institute.

Al-Khodary came to public attention during the 2008-2009 war on Gaza, when Israel banned reporters from crossing the Gaza-Israel border, and she was among the few reporters to report from Gaza. Taghreed describes herself as "among the very few 'objective' reporters covering the conflict. She has been praised for her 'in-depth and balanced coverage' of the conflict. Taghreed feels that her identity as a Palestinian was instrumental in her reporting in Gaza because she was able to 'live the story'."

After it emerged that Ethan Bronner, the New York Times' Jerusalem bureau chief, had a son serving as a conscript in the Israel Defense Forces, and that The New York Times refused to fire him after announcing this, Khodary decided to quit her job at The New York Times.
