Information

Fadil Saba (1901–1988) was a Palestinian photographer born in Nazareth , Palestine, and died in San Diego, USA. He is considered one of the first professional photographers in Palestine in the first half of the twentieth century, and is known for his works documenting social, political, and cultural life in Palestine before the Nakba, and later in the Arab exiles after 1948.

Origins and beginnings

Fadil Saba was born in Nazareth in 1901 to a Palestinian Christian family. He received his early education in the city's schools before turning to photography as a profession, at a time when this craft was still new to the region.
Saba Studio in Jaffa
In the 1930s, Fadil Saba established Saba Studio in Jaffa, which quickly became one of the most famous photography studios in Palestine. Through this studio, he captured portraits of Palestinian families, social events, political activities, and public figures, as well as views of Palestinian cities such as Jerusalem , Jaffa , and Haifa .

Nakba and exile

After the Nakba of 1948, Fadil Saba was forced to leave Palestine and moved between Lebanon, Jordan, and other Arab countries, where he continued his work as a photographer, documenting the conditions of Palestinian refugees and the diaspora. His photographs later became important archival material for understanding the experiences of Palestinians in exile.

Legacy and Influence

Fadil Saba's archive has been rediscovered in recent decades, and cultural and artistic institutions have begun collecting and preserving his photographs. They have also been used in exhibitions and research projects documenting pre-Nakba Palestine. Saba is considered one of the first to practice documentary photography in the Arab world, and is credited with playing an important role in shaping Palestinian visual memory.  He also participated in documenting the work of a number of archaeological missions in Palestine and the Levant, and worked at archaeological excavation sites in Egypt and Antioch (in the Anatolian region of Turkey), where he specialized in photographing terraces and mosaics, subjects that require precise and advanced photographic techniques.
