Two researchers from Al-Quds University were able to develop a “smartphone application to detect breast cancer,” which would revolutionize the world of early detection of this deadly disease.

The researchers, Dr. Zaidoun Salah and Mr. Yazid Badarin, Director of the Information and Communication Technology Department at the same college, obtained a patent for this system from the Palestinian Ministry of National Economy.

The most important feature of the system is that it enables women to detect breast cancer through a picture taken on their own phones, and allows the process to be repeated at all times without significant harm, with the result shown immediately.

Researcher Zaidoun, who heads the Department of Biology at Al-Quds Bard College, said, “This discovery enhances the prevailing method of detecting the disease, which requires women to visit medical centers and undergo a mammogram, which a woman cannot do more than once every year.” Two years due to the side effects of its recurrence, which increases the possibility of failure in early detection of the disease.”

Dr. added. Zaidoun, said that great efforts were made to work on the system, and that the results of the application were verified through experiments conducted on mice, which achieved great success, indicating that “work is currently underway to test the application on some women in a medical center in the city of Bethlehem.” ", and that the application will be available for use after the results of the experiments appear, through which women will be able to detect symptoms of the disease, which then requires them to go to medical centers to confirm definitively by taking a sample of the tumor to confirm whether it is benign or malignant.

The researchers confirmed that the new smart system contributes to early detection of the disease, and to preventing its development and wider spread in the body, as World Health Organization studies indicate that this disease is on the rise and is one of the most common types of cancer among women in developed and developing countries of the world.

The researchers explained that the mechanism of the system measures the temperature of the targeted area after blood flow and excessive activity in the metabolic process, in addition to the external signs of swelling, redness, shape and roughness of this swelling.

According to official statistics from the Palestinian Ministry of Health for the year 2017, the incidence of cancer in Palestine reached 83.8 new cases per 100,000 population, with 83.9 new cases per 100,000 population in the Gaza Strip, and 83.8 new cases per 100,000 population in the Gaza Strip. Population in the West Bank, and that 52.5% of new cancer cases recorded among Palestinians are females, and 47.5% are males.

The President of Al-Quds University, Professor Dr. Imad Abu Kishk, congratulated the researchers on the results they have achieved so far, wishing them the success of the experiments, noting that these discoveries are a direct result of the university’s strategic direction to invest in scientific research and creative minds, allocate the necessary resources for this, and harness What is necessary to make room for creativity, specifically in areas that will benefit Palestinian society and humanity in general.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Zaidoun Salah is the head of the Biology Department at Al-Quds Bard College. He holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in the field of cellular and molecular biology of cancer. He has more than 43 research papers in the field of cancer science published in international peer-reviewed journals, and has published many chapters in scientific books.

While A. works Yazid Badarin, Director of the Information and Communication Technology Department at Al-Quds Bard College, obtained a master’s degree from the same college in 2013 in mathematics teaching methods. He also obtained two international certificates in the field of education and classroom technology, one from Microsoft and the other from Google.

In the month of October of each year, Al-Quds University organizes various activities about breast cancer, and holds scientific awareness lectures about it in cooperation with specialized centers, as this month of each year is considered Breast Cancer Awareness Month in all countries of the world, and this stems from the university’s interest in contributing In finding some solutions to medical problems of international and local importance, the university also includes laboratories equipped with the latest equipment to carry out scientific research, and qualified medical staff.
