Dr. Zuhair Al-Helles is a Saudi cardiac surgeon of Palestinian origin from Gaza City. He is a Consultant in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Circulatory System Surgery at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh.
He was the first Saudi physician to receive the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in General Surgery in 1983. Over the course of his career, he has performed more than 15,000 heart surgeries in Saudi Arabia and abroad, most of them on children’s hearts.
Dr. Al-Helles has authored over 300 scientific research papers in his field and has developed several surgical techniques used in pediatric cardiac surgery. In recognition of his achievements, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz awarded him the King Abdulaziz Medal (First Class).
He has been recognized as one of the world’s top ten pediatric heart surgeons. Dr. Al-Helles also contributed to the development of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Department in Edmonton, Canada, where he was invited by officials to conduct surgeries and train staff through multiple visits during 1995–1996. His efforts helped transform the department into one of the best in Canada.
He received the Almarai Award for Scientific Innovation as a distinguished scientist in medicine in 2003 and was nominated for the Khwarizmi International Award in Iran.
