Information
Dr. Bassem Mohammad Ayesh is an Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Biochemistry from Birzeit University, earned in 1997. He later obtained both his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Molecular Biochemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, completing his doctorate in 2004.
His doctoral research focused on designing a gene therapy for bladder cancer. The therapy involves the targeted release of diphtheria toxin within cancer cells, controlled by the promoter for the IGFII gene. This approach was tested successfully on laboratory-grown cancer cells and in animal models using mice and rats.
Following his graduation, Dr. Ayesh joined the Central Laboratory at the Palestinian Ministry of Health as a molecular geneticist. There, he played a leading role in establishing and operating the first molecular genetics laboratory in the Gaza Strip, specializing in the molecular diagnosis of a wide range of viral and bacterial diseases.
Simultaneously, he began his academic career at the Islamic University of Gaza, contributing to the Life Sciences Graduate Program. He taught advanced courses in Molecular Cell Biology, Biochemistry, and specialized topics on Enzymes and Hormones. Throughout his academic tenure, Dr. Ayesh has supervised 23 Master’s theses and served as a committee member in five others at the Islamic University and Al-Azhar University in Gaza.
In 2009, Dr. Ayesh transitioned to a full-time academic role by joining Al-Aqsa University as an Assistant Professor. He contributed significantly to establishing and managing the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, where he currently serves as an Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics. During the same year, he also began teaching Medical Genetics and Molecular Biology to medical students at the Islamic University of Gaza, continuing this work to the present day.
Dr. Ayesh's research focuses on molecular diagnostics and genetic analysis, resulting in the publication of over 30 research articles in international, regional, and local journals. He has also authored a chapter in a book published by Springer. In addition, he actively participates in national and international scientific conferences as a lecturer and scientific committee member.
