Ahmed Ismail Ibrahim Nofal (March 12, 1946) is a Jordanian academic, born in Jaffa in Palestine. He is an associate professor at the Faculty of Sharia at the University of Jordan in Amman. He specializes in interpretation and the fundamentals of religion, and has a number of religious television and radio programs.
His education and beginnings
He finished high school in 1965 in Nablus, then went to Jordan and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Jordan in 1969. After that, he obtained a master’s degree and a doctorate in interpretation and fundamentals of religion from Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 1975 and 1978. He worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Jordan from 1970 to 1972 AD, then as a lecturer there in 1976, then as a teacher from 1978 AD until now, with the rank of “associate professor.”
The Sheikh worked in the armed struggle against the Zionists. The organizations included among their ranks people of Islamic orientation and religious people, but he left that work in 1970 AD when it turned into a fight between the Jordanian army and Palestinian organizations, pledging to himself never to shed any unlawful blood.
Ideas and principles
Sheikh Ahmed Nofal calls for purifying the interpretations of the Qur’an from Israeli narrations, and calls for relying on the Holy Qur’an itself and the authentic Sunnah in interpretation and rejecting anything other than that. Especially what was defamed by nature, the Qur’an itself, and reason, or what did not have a valid documented historical support; The Sheikh believes that there is no clash between sound reasoning and authentic transmission, but rather that they are compatible because they come from one source.
Palestine occupies the largest part of the Sheikh’s conscience, and this is clearly evident in his interpretations. The Sheikh was born in Palestine and emigrated from it when he was young, and the Qur’anic glad tidings that he undertakes through interpretation are originally linked to the issue of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Palestine, as in Surat Al-Isra.
Sheikh Ahmed is noted for his constant call to the Islamic nation and the Arabs in particular to rise up, abandon laziness, and prepare for the future. He is also a supporter of the nation choosing its rulers through the ballot boxes, and this appears in the Sheikh’s support and continuous defense of President Mohamed Morsi.
