A Palestinian teacher and her seven-year-old daughter headed to the United States of America on Wednesday, after winning a top spot in an international award dedicated to creating applications that address social problems using artificial intelligence.

Today, teacher Rana Khair and her daughter Selena traveled to Silicon Valley in Los Angeles, California, to present the application to a jury. Rana and Selina, along with two other teams, one American and the other Pakistani, occupied the first three spots for the international award presented by the company "Aredisent" for the children's category, which was presented by teachers and their children from all over the world.

Rana said that she will present the application, entitled “My Drawings Speak About Me,” to the jury next Saturday. The votes of the jury and the open public vote decide the first prize in the competition for children, along with another similar prize for adults.

Selenia said that she chose the application because she noticed the phenomenon of bullying in her school in the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank. She added, "There are boys who beat other boys, or make fun of girls."
Her mother, Rana, explained that in the first phase of work on the application, she conducted a public opinion poll in four schools, the results of which showed that 60 percent of students were exposed to bullying.
Her mother, Rana, explained that in the first phase of work on the application, she conducted a public opinion poll in four schools, the results of which showed that 60 percent of students were exposed to bullying.
The application includes assigning students to make drawings and displaying them on the computer, which indicates the possibility of the student being bullied through special notes on the drawings.

Rana said: “In the next stage, we present these results to social workers in schools to confront the problem and work to solve it.”
The official in the Ministry of Education, Jihad Dridi, said that the team consisting of the technology teacher and her daughter is one of more than a hundred Palestinian teams that applied for the award. He pointed out that the Ministry is working to introduce technology and artificial intelligence into Palestinian schools, and that it is making continuous progress in this field.

Rana dreams of the application's success in winning the first prize, and making it an international application used in schools around the world.

She said: "Bullying is a global problem, and if we succeed, this application may contribute to solving this problem." She added, "When the solution to a global problem comes from Palestine, this is of great importance."
