Information

A Palestinian medical team succeeded in performing a very complex operation to repair congenital defects in the pulmonary arteries of a 21-day-old child, while keeping the child’s heart beating without placing him on a cardiopulmonary assistive perfusion machine.

This operation, which was performed by Professor Nizar Hajjah and his medical team at Al-Makassed Islamic Charitable Hospital in Jerusalem, is considered a very rare operation in the world, while it was performed for the first time in Palestine. The operation also writes a new history and records an important development in the field of pediatric heart surgery at the regional and global levels.

Professor Hajjah works as a consultant and head of the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Congenital Heart Deformities at Al-Makassed Charitable Hospital in Jerusalem. In less than four years, he was able to set a record in performing more than a thousand high-quality and serious heart surgery operations.

Professor Hajjah worked in German hospitals for 25 years, and returned home in 2013 to begin training Palestinian doctors in heart operations, and after about three years he began performing specific operations, performing one or two operations a day.
