Professor Izzat Darwazeh is a highly esteemed figure in the field of communications and connected systems, serving as the founding Director of UCL's Institute of Communications and Connected Systems. With a membership of over 130 individuals, it stands as one of Europe's largest institutes of its kind. Additionally, he holds the Chair of Communication Engineering at UCL and the University of London, a position he has held since 2006.
Born in Syria in 1963, Professor Darwazeh's academic journey took him to Jordan in 1976, where he completed his high school education and earned his first university degree. Subsequently, he moved to the UK in 1984 to pursue postgraduate studies. Since 1991, he has been actively contributing to UK academia, focusing on pioneering the development of new techniques for Optical and Wireless Communication Systems. His groundbreaking work has led to several world-first demonstrations. Professor Darwazeh is a prolific author, with over 300 scientific papers and four books to his name, all within the realm of electronic and communications engineering.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Professor Darwazeh is a sought-after consultant for major organizations, including governments, the UN, electronics and communications industries, regulators, investment houses, and venture capital firms. He frequently provides consultation to law firms in the UK, Europe, and the USA and has served as an expert witness in telecommunications patent litigation cases in courts both in England and overseas.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Professor Darwazeh is deeply involved in Palestinian and Arab advocacy work in the UK. He played a pivotal role in founding the Manchester Palestine Solidarity Campaign in 1986 and co-founded the UK's Arab British Association in 2008, as well as the British Palestinian Policy Council in 2016. He has also contributed his expertise to various academic advisory boards, including the board of trustees of the Institute of Palestine Studies since 2013, the advisory committee of the Centre of Palestine Studies at SOAS-University of London from 2015 to 2021, and the board of the Centre of Lebanese Studies since 2021. Through his multifaceted contributions, Professor Darwazeh continues to make a significant impact both within academia and in advocacy efforts for the Palestinian and Arab communities.
