5. RESEARCH INTEREST My research focuses on three areas:
1. Care of patients in critical care units
Patients admitted to critical care units are increasingly of older age and suffering acute exacerbation of chronic illness. This strand of research focuses on assessing and treating the provision of care for patients who settled in critical care units.
2. Palliative and end of life care for critically ill patients
Many patients who are admitted to critical care units eventually die there, but there are many clinical, ethical and emotional challenges in managing the dying process well, so that suffering is relieved and the patient and their family comforted. The adoption of palliative care principles is widely known to enable good death, but the practice of palliative care is underdeveloped in critical care units, as well as in wider Jordanian health care; this reflects the situation in the Middle East where palliative care is not widely available or understood. This research theme focuses on improving quality of life of critically ill patients and their families through the prevention and relief of suffering by mean of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual
3. End of life communication and decision-making
This theme focuses on the interdisciplinary, multi-professional and family-centred end of life care communication; the role of advance care planning in end of life care; and the ethical dilemmas at the bedside and their resolution in clinical practice. It links to the care of critically ill patients theme of my research interest. I’m interested in examining critically ill patients’ and their relatives’ understandings of and preferences for end-of-life care with particular reference to the role played by new technologies in the relief of suffering and the procurement of the ‘good’ or ‘natural’ death; how they experience and understand these; and how their social and economic resources constrain and shape their experiences. I’m also interested in approaches to improve communication between clinical staff and patients’ families and between different categories of professionals, as well as how best to approach education of nursing staff who care for the dying in critical care units.
6. METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE
 Qualitative research
 Quantitative research
 Mixed method research
