Bashir Khalil Najm (September 13, 1936 - February 11, 1991) was a Palestinian Christian geographer, historian and thinker, born and raised in the Palestinian city of Tulkarm. The Arab World and Palestinian Affairs, and has many published books.

Bashir Khalil Najm was born in the Palestinian city of Tulkarm on September 13, 1936 to a Palestinian Christian family. He was baptized at the time of his birth in the Tulkarm Orthodox Church.

 

He was educated in the schools of his city of Tulkarm, where he studied at the Al-Fadiliyah School in the city. In 1957 he received a bachelor's degree in geography from "Augustana University" in Rock Island, Illinois, in the United States of America, then joined in the same year 1957 "Indiana University Bloomington" in Bloomington, Indiana, USA, from which in 1959 he obtained a master's degree In geography, he also obtained a doctorate in geography from the same university in 1969.

Bashir Najim worked in 1962 as an assistant university professor of geography at the University of Northern Iowa in the United States of America, and in 1972 he was promoted to the rank of Professor. In 1969, he assumed the position of the first head of the geography department at the university, and continued to do so until his retirement in 1987, to be the head of the department for eighteen consecutive years.

 

He also worked at Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University, and also worked as a visiting professor at the American University of Beirut during the period 1966-1967, and as a visiting professor in 1985 in the People's Republic of China at the West Asia and Africa Institute, Shaanxi Normal University and Hebei Normal University.

 

From 1972 to 1979 he was editor of the American Journal of Geographical Perspectives, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal of geography, and from 1983 to 1989 he was editor of the Pacesetter Books, a series of top geographic books published by the US National Council on Geographical Education ( NCGE).

 

He contributed to the establishment of the Arab American Alumni Association, with Ibrahim Abu-Lughod, Edward Said, Hanna Nasser, Nasir Aruri, Halim Barakat and others. He also founded from Cyprus in 1990 the "Palestine Geographical Society" and was elected as its first president.

 

He was a member of a range of scientific and research organizations and societies; Among the most important were the US National Council on Geographical Education, the Association for Middle Eastern Studies, and many others.

Bashir Najim married in the United States of America on August 27, 1966, the English language teacher Germana Portesan, and he has two children, Faris and Sharif.

Bashir Najm died on February 11, 1991 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, USA, at the age of 54 years and five months, after a long struggle with cancer that lasted for three years.
