Awad Saud Awad is a Palestinian writer, novelist and journalist living in Syria. He has 17 authors, three novels, 12 short story collections, and two books on Palestinian folklore. He is considered one of the most important Palestinian Arab novelists. He began writing at the end of the seventies and worked in the field of teaching, and contributed to the enrichment of cultural life through his articles and writings.

A member of the Arab Writers Union since 1989 as well as a member of the Union of Palestinian Writers and Journalists since 1979.

Awad Saud Awad was born in Jubb Yusef, Safad District, Palestine, 1943. In 1948, his parents fled to Syria as a result of the 1948 war. He lived in Syria in Khan Al Shieh camp, where he studied primary and preparatory education, then studied secondary school in Damascus after that at the United Nations Agency for Teacher Education. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees UNRWA in Deir Baalba in Homs, then began teaching and continued his studies and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in history from the Faculty of Arts, Damascus University in 1971. He is married to Mrs. Maryam Karim Al-Hamid, who helped encourage him to write according to him.

He worked as a teacher at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees and resigned from it in 1996.

 

his literary life

Awad Saud Awad began literary and research writing at the end of the seventies of the last century and published his first short story collection “Journey to Andromedia Magazine” in 1981. He founded the Palestinian Folklore Center in Damascus and for ten years supervised the celebrations of the Palestinian Folklore Week in the Syrian capital, Damascus. He was director of the center from 1991 to 1994.

He also worked as a journalist for Al-Nafza magazine from 1990 to 1994. He contributed with a group of Syrian writers and intellectuals to the establishment of a literary forum held once a month in one of the homes of members committed to it, in which writers discuss the conditions of culture and their literary activities. These literary meetings have been organized for more than 30 years, with the poet Muhammad Khaled Ramadan, the writer Mahmoud Muflih Al-Bakr and other founders of the forum in Damascus. Al-Salman - Suleiman Al-Bouti - Dr. Khair Allah Saeed (Abu Suad) - Dr. Farhan Al-Yahya - the poet Fayez Al-Iraqi, the Kurdish researcher Dia Joan - and the poet Nuri Al-Jarrah before he traveled outside Syria, and a number of literary figures were hosted in Syria, including: Saeed Hourania - Khairy Al-Dhahabi - Ahmed Youssef Daoud - Fayez Khaddour - Dr. Ok Tizini and others.

He is one of the critics of the story and the novel in Syria, and his contributions in this field are significant, as the number of critical articles he wrote exceeded 500 articles, and he also made many contributions to the Palestinian folklore.

He also gave literary lectures in most Syrian cities and towns. It was published in Syrian, Palestinian and Arab newspapers and magazines. The number of his published articles exceeded 1500 articles between story, literary criticism and literary studies, as well as studies in the field of folklore in Palestine in particular and in the Levant region in general.

He published his stories, critical studies and articles in more than fifty newspapers or magazines, the most important of which are:

He was also the head of the jury of the Manbij Short Story Competition at the level of Syria in 2009.

He was a rapporteur of the Society of Story and Fiction in the Arab Writers Union for the following years 2005-2006, 2009-2010, where he chaired its monthly meetings, oversaw its story festivals and narrative seminars, honored one of the association's flags annually, and issued a special issue of the short story in Syria in 2006.

2005:

The Story Festival entitled “The Picture of the Other in the Short Story” was held on July 5 and 6, at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.

The annual symposium entitled “The Role of the Novelist in Change” on 12/13, at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.

Honoring the writer, Khairi Al-Dhahabi, at the Cultural Center in Mezzeh, on 23/11.

In 2006:

The Story Festival entitled “The Paradox and the Strangeness in the Short Story” was held in Homs on May 9 and 10, hosted by the Lebanese writer Dr. Ali Hijazi.

The novel’s symposium entitled “Multiple Discourse Forms” will be held on 6/9 with the guest of the symposium, the Jordanian writer Muhammad Obeidallah, at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.

Honoring the writer Hassan Hamid in the Al-Assad Library on December 6.

In 2009:

The Story Festival entitled "The Place in the Short Story - Palestine as a Model" on October 4, at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.

The Novel Symposium “Palestine in the Arabic Novel” was hosted by the Jordanian novelist Jamal Naji on 7 T.1, at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.

Honoring the writer Malik Sukour in Tartous on 12/9.

In 2010:

The Story Festival entitled “Imagination in the Short Story” on 2/6, at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.

The Novel Symposium entitled “Time in the Narrative Discourse” on 13th v 1. Hosting the Jordanian Subhi Fahmawi and the Palestinian Rashad Abu Shawar, at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.

Honoring King Haj Obeid at the Cultural Center in Jableh on 13/11.
