Laila al-Atrash, (1948 - October 17, 2021) is a Palestinian-Jordanian novelist whose novels and short stories have been translated into several languages, including English, French, Italian, Korean, German and Hebrew. Some of them are taught in Jordanian, Arab, French and American universities.

 

Laila al-Atrash devoted her writings to defending humanitarian and social issues, and monitored the suffering of Arab women through her nine works of fiction and other literary works, her articles, journalistic investigations and television programmes, and finally writing for theatre. As an editor of the website “Dialogue Al-Qalam”, she called for renouncing extremism and social and intellectual violence, and spreading the values of tolerance, coexistence and gender non-discrimination. She also monitored the suffering of Arab women in their countries, and broke many taboos by raising controversial social issues. And through her position as the head of the “Jordanian PEN” Center, which is affiliated with the global organization known by that name for the defense of freedom of expression, she works to change the stereotype about Arabs and Muslims among the world’s writers through the website Dialog Al-Pen for the Rapprochement of Cultures, and introduces Arab writers, thinkers and translators, with a focus On freedom of opinion and thought, while addressing the offense against religious postulates

 

She contributed to the launch of the "Family Library" and "Reading for All" project in Jordan in 2007 and was responsible for media and its official spokesperson. She was chosen by the Fourth Arab Human Development Report on the advancement of women writers who left a clear impact on society, and was chosen by the English-language magazine “My Lady” in 2008 as one of the 60 most successful women in the Arab world. Ahl al-Bayt University, then Al-Ahliyya Amman University and the “Youth towards Change” movement chose her as the Cultural Personality of the Year in the years 2009-2010-2011.

 

I participated in the Writer-in-Residence Program at the University of Iowa, USA, 2008, for a full semester, and also lectured at Chatham University in Pennsylvania, Northwest University in Chicago, British Manchester, and the University of Lyon II, France. Awarded the American Medal of Courage. Some of her novels, short stories, and articles have been translated into 9 foreign languages, and some of them have been published in Jordanian, Arab, and American universities. She contributed to the preparation of the Jordan file in the Dictionary of Feminist Writers published in French by UNESCO in 2013. Some of her literary works were transformed into radio series, and her literary and social programs won awards in radio and television festivals.
