Suhail Abu Nuwara (1940-2016) is a Palestinian writer, playwright and artist born in Nazareth . He is considered one of the writers and artists committed to national and societal issues, as his writings and drawings reflect the concerns and suffering of the Palestinian people.
His upbringing
Suhail was born to a family interested in art and literature. His mother is the artist Maryam Abu Nawara, one of the pioneers of the art movement in Nazareth. She was busy throughout her artistic career drawing natural landscapes throughout Palestine . His brother is the writer Ramzi Abu Nawara, author of a collection of short stories entitled “A Narrator’s Text.” He was also the director of the Ali Baba Library, which he opened himself.
Suhail was interested in reading and writing since his youth and worked as a writer for a local newspaper. His star shone in the early seventies after he published his famous play “Zaghroudat al-Ard” in the Haifa magazine Al-Jadeed. He also wrote a novel but did not succeed in publishing it. In addition to writing, Suhail was interested in art and has dozens of drawings that reflect the concerns and suffering of the Palestinian people.
His works
The play “Zaghroudat Al Ard” (1975) is considered Suhail’s most prominent work, as it follows the modern theatre school and was performed in various Palestinian theatres. It was also published in a separate book and in some newspapers and magazines in Arab countries. The play was admired by many people and praised by a number of critics and those interested in theatre. Its fame spread widely until it was performed in Beirut for the first time outside Palestine after it was published by Al Tariq magazine, affiliated with the Lebanese Communist Party .
In addition, Abu Nawara contributed to the authorship of a number of literary works and dozens of drawings.
His death
Suhail Abu Nawara died on March 12, 2016, at the age of 76. His funeral was held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth.
