Information

Maroun Ashkar, (1931 - May 10, 2004) is a Palestinian musician and artist, born in Nazareth and descended from a family of Lebanese musicians. His father, Rashid Ashkar, was a lute player and deacon in the Maronite Church, from whom he learned over sixty years the music and art of the church choir.

He learned music at the beginning of his artistic life on his own, and then studied music at Kibbutz Oranim between the years (1951-1953), and learned to play the violin with a Bulgarian teacher. He worked in the education field for 42 years as a teacher of music, painting and handicrafts. He has many school songs that are taught in many schools in occupied Palestine in 1948. The city of Nazareth was the focus of his artistic life and musical compositions, so he created more than 25 works of art for it.

He was one of the pioneers of Palestinian composers in composing lyrical sketches. He was very influenced by the Rahbani School. He was a violinist and had interests in Western and Armenian music. He also worked as a leader of the choir of Saint Maron in the Maronite Church in Nazareth until his death on 10 May 2004.
