Shawkat Jamil Dalal (in English: Shaw Dallal), known in English as Shaw Dallal (October 25, 1931 - July 3, 2016), is a Palestinian writer, writer and novelist, from the Palestinian city of Tulkarm, a professor of law and politics, and activist in In the field of human rights, he holds American citizenship, and he has a collection of international fiction books.

 

His upbringing and life

Shawkat Jamil Dalal was born in the city of Tulkarm in the West Bank on October 25, 1931 to a family consisting of a father, a mother and 8 children. His father is Jamil Dalal from the city of Tulkarm, who was one of the leaders of the Palestinian revolution in 1936, and one of the mayors of Tulkarm, and his mother is Lutfia Beshtawi Dalal. His older brother is the Palestinian politician Shakib Dalal. Shawkat received his education in the schools of his city of Tulkarm, including the prestigious Al-Fadhili School in the city, then joined St. John's School in Jerusalem.

 

In his early youth, Shawkat worked with his friend Khaled Al-Darzi to spread awareness among the residents of their city of Tulkarm about the dangers of Zionist immigration to Palestine. On November 29, 1949, Shaukat Dalal left for Kuwait, and after nineteen months he returned to his city of Tulkarm, where he decided to go to the United States of America to complete his university education. On September 15, 1951, he enrolled in law at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and there he met his wife, Diana Fuller. In 1959 he received a doctorate in law from the same university, and worked as a lawyer from 1960 to 1963 in the cities of Buffalo, Hubbard, Felt, Fuller, Utica, and New York, and then worked as a notary from 1963 to 1967.

 

In the early seventies, he was assigned the position of legal advisor to the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in Kuwait, and in the mid-eighties he returned to the United States, and there he headed the New Hartford Public Library from 1988 until 1996, as he was one of the founders of the College of Medicine in the Republic of Dominican and became on its board of directors.

 

Shaukat Dalal worked as a university professor at Mohawk Valley Community College and Utica College, as well as a professor of political science at Syracuse University from 1991 to 2004, and since 2004 he worked at Colgate University, from which he later retired with the rank of "honorary professor". Shawkat was also a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Human Rights, and Hanan Ashrawi, Edward Said, and others were with him on the Board of Commissioners. He is also a member and writer at the Beirut-based Institute for Palestine Studies.

He is married to Diana Fuller Dalal, who was born on October 23, 1954, and he has three children: Stephen, Donna, Thomas, in addition to eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
