Ghassan Karian: A British businessman of Palestinian origin, a pioneer in Arab participation in British local democracy, became the first Arab elected in Britain as mayor of a municipality. He was first elected as a Labour Party council member in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in West London in 1994 when he was twenty-one years old. He remained in this position for twelve years, and in 2002 his fellow council members elected him mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham.
