Izz al-Din Ahmad Amarna was born in the town of Ya'bad, Jenin district, in 1971. Being blind, he attended the Al-Ala'iya School for the Blind in Bethlehem. He completed his secondary education in 1989 at Ya'bad Boys' High School. He earned a diploma in Sharia from the College of Islamic Sciences in Qalqilya in 1991, a bachelor's degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Legislation from An-Najah National University in 2006, and a master's degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Legislation from Al-Quds University in 2010. His travel ban imposed by the Israeli occupation prevented him from pursuing a doctorate.
Amarna has worked at the Ministry of Religious Endowments since 1996, supervising Quran memorization centers. He faced harassment from the ministry after the Palestinian division in 2007. Amarna writes and composes rhymed poetry, and is a preacher, teacher in mosques, Quran reciter, and renowned singer throughout the country. He recorded the entire Quran in his voice at a studio in Tulkarm Governorate, a first for a blind reciter in Palestine.
Amarna began his activism at the Islamic Sciences College in Qalqilya, the first stage that contributed to shaping his personality, intellectual development, and affiliation with the Islamic movement. There, he began his activities in public speaking, teaching, participating in seminars and lectures, and for a period, working in media outreach for Hamas through participation and chanting at festivals, as well as in preaching and reform efforts. Amarna was arrested by the Israeli occupation several times, the first time in 1994 for three months under administrative detention, followed by seven months in 1996, 58 months in 2001 in a military case, and seven months in 2016. He was also detained for several days on other occasions. The occupation has prevented Amarna from traveling since 1993, denying him opportunities for medical treatment and education abroad. He has been summoned dozens of times by all branches of the Palestinian Authority and subjected to various forms of psychological and moral abuse.
Amarna built his intellectual and political orientation on the basis of the special status of Palestine as an Islamic endowment land, not an inch of which may be given away, and the necessity of liberating it with all forms of resistance, starting with popular resistance and ending with armed resistance.
Amarneh opposes political settlements, the peace process, and any path related to the occupation, including the Oslo Accords and their aftermath. He does not reject the option of a long-term truce without relinquishing rights and principles. He believes that the Palestinian division has severely damaged the Palestinian cause, rendering Palestinians unable to address the world as a unified entity. Many of their religious, educational, social, and economic institutions have suffered, and Islamic activity in mosques and Quranic schools has been severely restricted. He believes that the PLO loses its inclusive and liberationist character if it fails to include key Palestinian factions that remain outside it, most notably Hamas and Islamic Jihad. He maintains that the occupation will not submit, concede, or give anything except through force. Therefore, armed resistance is the only solution to this criminal occupation, which is armed with a full arsenal of weapons, money, media, and allied states.
