Abdul Rahim al-Hanbali is a Palestinian veterinarian , entrepreneur , and pioneer of charitable work in Palestine . Born on October 16, 1940, in Nablus , West Bank , he was the first head of the Palestinian Veterinary Syndicate. 

His life

Abdul Rahim Muhammad Radi Taha al-Hanbali was born on October 16, 1940, in the city of Nablus in the West Bank of Palestine. He then moved with his family to Damascus, Syria , where he received his primary education at Al-Khalidiya Elementary School, then at Al-Ghazaliya Elementary School. He then completed his preparatory education at Al-Jahiz School, and then moved with his family to Kuwait, where he completed his secondary education in the science section at Al-Shuwaikh School in 1960. Abdul Rahim al-Hanbali then enrolled in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Cairo University , but in his fourth year at the college, the Egyptian authorities expelled him from the university along with other Palestinian students due to their political activity. He moved to Iraq and enrolled in the University of Baghdad , graduating in 1965 with a degree in animal surgery. He then returned to Cairo and obtained a higher diploma in pharmaceutical and nutritional sciences from Cairo University in 1967. 
Abdul Rahim al-Hanbali married and had ten children, five boys and five girls. The Israeli authorities pursued his son, Muhammad al-Hanbali, for joining the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, until Israeli soldiers eventually assassinated him on September 5, 2003.  The Israeli authorities also detained his eldest son, pharmacist Omar al-Hanbali, for more than a year and a half.

His career

After graduating from university, Abdul Rahim Al-Hanbali worked as a veterinarian in the Veterinary Medicine Department in Nablus. He held a number of administrative positions, starting with managing the Veterinary Medicine Department in Nablus in 1966, then managing the veterinary departments in Nablus, Qalqilya, Tulkarm, and Salfit together until 1973. In 1973, Abdul Rahim Al-Hanbali established the first veterinary pharmaceutical factory in Palestine and the Arab world, the Nablus Veterinary Medicine Factory, which later became Dana Pharmaceuticals in 1992. Abdul Rahim Al-Hanbali, in cooperation with other partners, also founded Aveco Veterinary Medicines Company in Amman , Jordan, in 1978. In 1974, Abdul Rahim Al-Hanbali became the first head of the Veterinary Medicine Association in Palestine, a position he held for two consecutive terms. In addition to managing the Veterinary Medicine Department in Nablus, Abdul Rahim Al-Hanbali was appointed Director General of the Field Diseases Department in Palestine starting in 1990. Until his retirement in 2000, he then lectured at the Faculty of Agriculture at An-Najah National University from 2000 to 2002. In 2005, Abdul Rahim Al-Hanbali became a member of the Board of Trustees of Rawda College in Nablus, then Vice President of Rawda College. In early 2019, he was elected as a member of the Excellence Support Council at An-Najah National University.

Charity work

Abdul Rahim al-Hanbali was one of the founders of the Nablus Zakat Committee in 1977, and he chaired it from 1996 until the Palestinian division in 2007, when the Palestinian National Authority government issued a decision to dissolve the committee and form a new one. Abdul Rahim al-Hanbali also chaired the Charitable Endowment Committee in Nablus Governorate in 1988, then chaired the Mosque Reconstruction Committee in Nablus Governorate. He then became a member of the Nablus Civil Committee starting in 2000, and was later appointed a member of the Palestinian Supreme Council of Endowments. In 2014, Abdul Rahim al-Hanbali was elected a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nablus Diwans, and in 2015, he became a member of the Supreme Islamic Council in Jerusalem.

His arrest

In 1999, the Israeli authorities issued a decision preventing Abdel Rahim al-Hanbali from traveling outside Palestine. In 2002, the Israeli army demolished his factory during its invasion of Nablus in 2002. In 2002, the Israeli authorities detained Abdel Rahim al-Hanbali for 27 days in the Petah Tikva interrogation center. In 2007, the Israeli authorities arrested him again, and his detention continued for approximately 42 days.
