Ali Ahmad Hweidi was born in Al-Bass camp near Tyre, Lebanon, on December 19, 1966, to a Palestinian refugee family whose origins trace back to the depopulated village of Umm al-Faraj in the occupied Acre district. He studied primary school at the UNRWA-run Jiddin and Al-Naqab schools, and secondary school at Al-Ittihad School in Tyre, from which he obtained his high school diploma in 1984. He earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from the Lebanese University in 2008. He worked as the director of the British Save the Children charity in Rashidieh camp between 1988 and 2000.
Huweidi was known for his religious commitment in his early youth, and while in high school he joined “Abu Shaker’s Cubs”, which were fighting groups that participated in confronting the occupation forces on the outskirts of the Rashidieh camp during the Israeli invasion in 1982.
Huweidi was interested in the issues of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, and became a representative of the Palestinian Return Centre (headquartered in London) in Lebanon between (2000-2005). He managed the Thabet Organization for the Right of Return, and became the Director-General of the “Committee 302 for the Defense of Refugee Rights” since 2016. This committee is concerned with monitoring the performance of the UNRWA agency, and at the same time defending it against attempts to liquidate it.
Huweidi appears in various media outlets speaking about developments in the Palestinian issue, especially refugee issues, and he has a book entitled “Palestinian Displaced Persons in Lebanon: Between the Bitterness of Refuge and the Tragedies of Migration” (2006).
Huweidi calls for the need to preserve Palestinian principles at this critical stage, because, in his opinion, there is no alternative to Palestine from its river to its sea, and all agreements since Oslo have proven that a settlement will not bring anything to the Palestinian people.
Huweidi suffered from the harshness of displacement and life inside the camps of Lebanon. He witnessed the Zionist aggression against Lebanon in 1978 and 1982. He was arrested by the occupation in Ansar prison in 1982, and he stayed there for twenty-two months. His father, sister and brother were also arrested for several months.
