The martyr Zafer Al-Masri was born in the city of Nablus in 1941. He received his secondary education at An-Najah National College, and then completed his university education at the American University in Beirut in 1963. From that date until the moment of his martyrdom, the martyr Zafer was keen to remain on his land and to work in his homeland amidst the pain and suffering of his Palestinian people inside and in the diaspora.
The martyr Zafer Al-Masri refused and declined to bow down and submit to the temptations of living outside the occupied land, and preferred to remain with his steadfast people, facing all the conditions of social, humanitarian and political suffering.
Zafer was a successful economist whose business ventures extended beyond the occupied homeland. In 1973, he was elected President of the Chamber of Commerce. He also made inroads into all social and intellectual fields and was a pioneer in giving and supporting all charitable, humanitarian, and cultural institutions. Moreover, Zafer had many humanitarian stances and actions, which are among the most important features of his personality.
The martyr Dhafer did not prefer the slogan to serve the homeland, but rather Dhafer preferred the same slogan to serve the downtrodden human being, as he practiced it as an action and not as an empty slogan like a hollow idol that has no movement or application.
The martyr Zafer always said, "The land is liberated by serving humanity, not by serving slogans." In this way, Zafer dealt with his people in a civilized manner, bringing people together through humanity, which is the highest and strongest motivation for action. This was truly embodied in the strict mass gathering on the day of his martyrdom and at his funeral.
In 1976, Zafer al-Masri was elected to the Nablus Municipal Council. This was the first municipal election held under occupation, and he served as deputy mayor until Israel froze the municipal council in 1982.
An Israeli officer took over the municipality for three years, so the bodies, institutions, and unions in the city of Nablus moved to appeal for help and demand deliverance from the injustice and oppression that had befallen them. It was necessary for a person from the city to take over the presidency of the municipality, someone who would interact with the citizens and their problems.
After negotiations and consultations, the green light was given to the martyr Zafer, and the Chamber of Commerce took over the Nablus Municipal Council in November 1985 for a transitional period of two years, during which new municipal elections would be called.
Joy and happiness spread throughout the city, and the Nablus chants echoed: “Our municipality has been returned to us.” One of the foreign journalists commented on this, saying that the method of restoring the municipality is practically an election, but without Israeli approval.
Thus, the process of the martyr Zafer Al-Masri taking over the municipality of Nablus took place, and there were voices that opposed this, which the martyr Zafer commented on by saying that it was a correct phenomenon, as the martyr was not one of tense positions and statements, and he was calm and balanced in his words and tolerant in his actions.
The martyr Dhafer shouldered this great responsibility with unwavering integrity and honesty, qualities characteristic of him. From day one, he worked tirelessly and relentlessly, racing against time to give the Palestinian people hope for steadfastness and the motivation to remain on their land. Had the treacherous bullet not pierced his great heart, he would have achieved many of the hopes and goals he aspired to in service to his city, his homeland, and his people. The assassination of the martyr Dhafer al-Masri was an attempt to assassinate the Palestinian word, the Palestinian stance, and the Palestinian cause, as well as an assassination of conscious Palestinian thought.
