Salah al-Din Anabtawi 1891-1996
Dr. Salah al-Din Muhammad Anabtawi was born in Nablus. He studied at An-Najah National School and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut in 1924. During his university studies, he contributed to the founding of the Arab Nationalist Group. He opened a clinic in Nablus and specialized in pediatrics in England in 1950. He was elected to the Nablus Municipal Council in 1951 and was appointed by the Nablus Municipality to the Board of Trustees of An-Najah National School.
He contributed to the founding of the Arab Workers' Association, which faced harassment from the British occupation. He also contributed to the founding of the Sports and Literary Club and the Arab Club. He helped establish the "Every Citizen a Guardian" Committee, which aimed to protect the land and pursue land brokers. He contributed to the founding of the Al-Birr Charitable Society and an anti-illiteracy society.
He was a member of the first Palestinian National Council, which convened in Jerusalem in 1964. He contributed to the founding of the first pediatricians' association in 1966. He was deported from his homeland by Israeli occupation forces on October 25, 1968. He was elected President of the Jordanian Medical Association from 1969 to 1975, during which time he worked to amend the association's constitution, establish a pension fund, and create a social security system for members of the association's general assembly. He returned to Jordan in 1994 after 26 years in exile. He passed away in Amman in 1996. A memorial service was held for him at the Shoman Cultural Forum in Amman. A memorial service was also held for him by the Nablus Municipality, the Jordanian Medical Association, and An-Najah National University in the Martyr Dhafer Al-Masri Hall at An-Najah National University on October 21, 1996.
