I was born and raised in Nablus in 1950 to Palestinian parents. I attended its schools throughout my schooling: primary school at Qurtuba School, preparatory school at Fatimiyah School, and secondary school partly at Aishiyah School and partly at An-Najah National College. On March 18, 1969, while in my final year of secondary school (Tawjihi) in the science track, I was arrested by the Zionist occupation authorities along with a group of girls from Nablus. I spent five months in Nablus Central Prison and was released at the end of August 1969 with a sentence of two years of full house arrest in the city and partial house arrest.
I had to go to the police station to prove my presence in the city, which prevented me from completing my university studies and achieving my dream of studying architecture, even though I had been an outstanding student throughout my studies.
I then enrolled in the Teachers' Institute affiliated with An-Najah National College, which at the time was the only college offering postgraduate studies in Nablus. It's worth noting that I was only able to enroll after the late Dr. Qadri Touqan, may God have mercy on him, who was the president of the college at the time, provided a personal guarantee and sponsorship to the military authorities due to scheduling conflicts. At the institute, with the partial residence order imposed on me at home, where the study at the teachers’ institute was in the evening, and thanks to him, may God have mercy on him, I completed my studies and obtained a diploma in mathematics in July 1971, but I was unable to be employed or work because of my time in detention, and I remained prohibited from traveling abroad for the same reason.
Because of my upbringing in a religious family, being the youngest member, and joining the Scout movement from elementary school, loving people, helping them, doing good, loving the homeland, and feeling responsible occupied the largest part of my life. I was distinguished in all my stages, and during the school period I was always a member of the class committee or a participant in most of the active school committees, activities, and events that were in the city at that time.
In 1972, she married Sidqi Reda Qandilo, who was a merchant, and had two daughters and two sons with him. The eldest, Lubna, holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, Wadah holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, Duha holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance, and Abdullah is still in secondary school.
After my marriage and having and raising my children, I continued to participate in any social activity held in the city that did not conflict with my religious upbringing. I joined most of the charitable societies and tried to be as active as possible in the activities held by those societies. All of this was done with great encouragement and cooperation from my husband.
In September 1985, at the request of the members of the administrative board of the Child Welfare Association, and with my mother's guidance and the encouragement of my husband, who played the most significant role in this, I ran for a position on the board of that association. I was elected for several terms since then, the last being in 1996, where I came in third place and was assigned the position of treasurer, a post I have held ever since. In December 1987, I ran for membership on the administrative board of the Women's Union Association, where I had been a general assembly member since 1972.
I came in second place among the winners and ran again for a second term in June 1992, receiving the highest number of votes and being elected vice president. My colleagues and I were able to shoulder the workload during that period and preserve the achievements of our predecessors. The associations were undertaking tremendous responsibilities during the occupation, providing national institutions that served the community, especially during the Intifada. For example, the Women's Union Hospital treated the wounded, as well as the families of prisoners and martyrs, and other poor and needy people in difficult circumstances with limited financial resources. In February In 2000, after Sister Lawahez Abdel Hadi resigned for health reasons from the presidency of the association, the administrative body of the association elected me as president of the Women's Union Association, and I am still in my position to this day.
I and my colleagues are doing our utmost to carry the trust and raise the association and its institutions to the highest levels so that it can play the active role that we all hope for and advance society and women to reach the goals for which our virtuous sisters established it eighty years ago. Nablus will remain a beacon of work and a lighthouse of knowledge, as it has always been known for its people and its institutions. I am also a member of the Council of Mothers of Hajja Rushda since 1994 and I am re-elected every year. I am also the treasurer of the Union of Voluntary Women's Associations of the Northern Branch, which includes all the voluntary associations of the Northern Branch, which was established in 1989 and includes all the women's associations in the northern governorates of the West Bank. I am a member of the National and Islamic Activities Committee for the Nablus Governorate and finally a member of the founding committee of the Elderly Committee emanating from the Community Development Center of An-Najah National University.
